Energy saving tips

The environment is everyone’s concern. For this reason, the SSH wishes to make as many energy savings as possible. For example, by fitting good insulation and using certified wood during renovation and maintenance work. Furthermore, we replace outdated equipment and electrical equipment with new energy efficient models. By using energy saving bulbs in all the buildings of the SSH, the energy consumption has decreased considerably. You can also do your part by following the tips below, for instance:

  • switch off all the lights when you go out
  • never leave lights on unnecessarily when you are at home
  • use energy saving bulbs
  • do not leave your TV, computer or other equipment on stand-by for more than one hour. It is also a good idea to turn off equipment completely, for fire safety reasons
  • chargers also use electricity if they are left in the electricity socket unnecessarily. As soon as a device is charged, remove the charger from the socket
  • wash your clothes at a temperature of 20 ºC or 30 ºC, for example. You will also make considerable savings if you fill the machine with washing

Did you know that 75% of the total energy costs are for heating? You can use the following tips to reduce your energy consumption easily:

  • turn off the heating when you leave your residence
  • turn down the heating approximately one hour before you go to bed. Your room will certainly still remain warm for another hour
  • if you put on a warm sweater and socks, you can often turn down the temperature by 2 ºC
  • close the curtains in the evening and at night

It is important that your residence is regularly ventilated. If you do not ventilate, the air will become damp and this is not healthy. Unfortunately, due to ventilating a great deal of heat and therefore energy is lost. Below are some tips:

  • open your window for a maximum of five minutes per day
  • leave the ventilation grids open for the rest of the day
  • ventilate the bathroom for at least two hours after having a shower. In this way, you will prevent the formation of mould.

Refrigerator and freezer

  • allow food to cool down first before placing it in the refrigerator
  • a refrigerator works best if you set the temperature at 4°C and a freezer works best at a temperature of -18°C. Setting them at a lower temperature is therefore pointless and wastes energy
  • defrost your freezer every two months or when ice starts to form
  • switch off the refrigerator and freezer if you are going away for a long time. Leave the doors open slightly to prevent the formation of mould
  • make sure that the refrigerator and freezer can release their heat, so position them 10 cm away from a wall
