The Building

History of the building
The building used to be part of the manor 'De Roos onder de Linde'.
In 1723 the Utrecht University bought this manor and te Hortus Botanicus of the University established themselves in the manor gardens. For centuries students were taught about plants in these gardens. The building at Nieuwegracht 187 used to be the director's residence of the Professor Director of the Hortus Botanicus and is named after one of its inhabitants that used to live there, Professor Miquel, a famous professor in Botany (1811-1871). Around the year 1970 the Hortus Botanicus moved to the new University center De Uithof. The historical Botanical Garden is now part of the University Museum who have their entrance at the  Lange Nieuwstraat 106  (see map below)
In 2003 the SSH bought the Miquelhuis from the University of Utrecht and renovated and furnished the building to accommodate international guests in Utrecht.
